Chapter One
A Mysterious Paper
One May afternoon, my uncle, Professor Liedenbrock, came running into his old Hamburg home. As he made straight for his study, he shouted to me,“Come, I must speak with you, Axel!”
My uncle was a professor at a local university, where he taught a course on minerals . He was quite well-known . Among the professors and scientists, he was a respected colleague ; while among the students he was known as the professor who always had trouble pronouncing difficult words, and always ended his attempt with a string of curse words.
He was a tall, thin, healthy man in his fifties. He was quite wealthy for a professor, and had a live-in maid , named Martha. A young girl of seventeen named Grauben also lived in the home. She was the professor’s goddaughter , and moved in with him after her parents passed away a long time ago. And, lastly, there was me, his nephew . After the death of my mother and father, I also turned to my uncle for help. When I moved in, he allowed me to become his assistant, which pleased me very much, because I take a great interest in his work.
“Where are you?”my uncle shouted, the moment he entered his study. He was a rather impatient man.
I hurried into the room, and found him sitting in a chair with a book on his lap. He was a great lover and collector of books;but he only liked to collect books that were rare, or unreadable.
